Italy recorded nearly 1,000 deaths in just 24 hours on Thursday, breaking its previous daily record set at the height of the first wave of the pandemic in March.
According to Italian health authorities, 993 coronavirus-related deaths were recorded in a single day, while in the UK 414 people died. The UK has more deaths per 100,000 inhabitants than other hit countries.
"We can not say that we are in a stable situation in the whole region at the moment," said in a press conference Dr. Catherine Smallwood from the WHO Health Emergency Program.
The WHO European Region, which includes several Asian countries, accounts for 40% of global cases, said Dr. Hans Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe, warned that growing cases in Central and Southern Europe were "worrying". Other countries in the Balkans and the Caucasus region are also experiencing an increase in cases, said Dr. Smallwood.
WHO experts warned that Covid "has not disappeared" and "will not disappear".
"During the Christmas and winter holiday periods there is a real amount of coronavirus becoming even more of a problem as people gather," he added. Smallwood at the conference.
