A new therapy for breast cancer promises to destroy tumors within the body and is underway in Wroclaw, Poland. The technology - which can eliminate the need for painful operation - won the highest award on Innovation Radar.
Innovation Radar is an initiative of the European Commission that identifies high potential innovations and research projects which are then funded by the European Union. The therapy is known as Nanocargo and involves injecting nano-particles directly into the tumor.
"Existing cancer therapy does not aim for anything specific, the drugs go everywhere in the body. Our approach is very specific, targeted and targets only the tumor, not other parts of the body," explained Dr. Nanasaheb Thorat, one of the creators of Nanocargo. "The award gives me a great opportunity to transfer basic science, or my ideas, to real-world technologies."

At the moment, the team is working in the lab to determine the perfect dose of Nanocargo to treat different types of tumors and minimize side effects before moving on to clinical trials.
