The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) says global levels of carbon dioxide continue to rise despite the environmental impact of the isolation, measures taken to curb the spread of coronavirus.
The OBM has warned that the Covid-19 pandemic is not the solution to climate change, and the significant decline in carbon dioxide emissions by 2020 was simply a negligible change in the long-term graph. "We need a steady leveling of the curve," said WBO Secretary-General Prof. Petteri Taalas.
At the start of the pandemic, isolation measures taken across the globe brought about a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, as flights were canceled and millions of people worked from home.
"Carbon dioxide stays in the atmosphere for centuries and in the ocean for longer. The last time the Earth experienced a comparable CO2 concentration was 3-5 million years ago, when the temperature was 2-3 ° C warmer and the sea level was 10-20 meters higher than now. "But there were no 7.7 billion inhabitants," Taalas said.
#COVID19 has had no measurable impact on CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere (cumulative past and current emissions), per WMO Greenhouse Gas Bulletin

He stressed that such a level has never been seen in the history of OBM data. However, despite the fact that the impact on the climate was negligible, he stressed that the pandemic "provides us with a platform for more sustainable and ambitious climate action."
"The necessary changes are economically affordable and technically feasible and would affect our daily lives very little."
