Recent studies have shown that immunity to coronavirus can last for at least 6 months, or even longer (years).
The findings of this study, posted on biorxiv.org, focused research on the body's immunity to Covid-19. Some studies have focused on antibodies, or components of immune system proteins, and some suggest that immunity may weaken in just a few months.
However, the new study, which has not yet been published in a scientific journal, involves analyzing multiple divisions of immune memory at different times: antibodies, B cells and T cells, among others.
The study included about 185 adults between the ages of 19 and 81 in the US who passed Covid-19. Most adults have had moderate symptoms. Researchers from the La Jolla Institute of Immunology, University of California, San Diego, etc. - analyzed blood samples collected at various times after the onset of the first symptoms and some others taken 6 months later.
In blood samples, they examined what is called the component of immune memory. The researchers found that the antibodies were "stable" and had experienced a "modest drop" that ranged from 6 to 8 months, but what they noticed was that there was a range about 200 times higher in the level of antibodies in adults.
Of course such a very important study comes with limitations, as it takes even deeper research to prove similar results between a larger group of people at different time periods.
This study proves once again that there is a kind of immunity to SARS-CoV-2, but it varies from person to person.
Importantly, the body's immunity to the virus is even longer-lived than originally thought, leading scientists to believe in an effective vaccine that would lead to a sustained protective immunity.
