"... Two years before he left home, my father told my mother that I was very ugly. [...] Everything has remained frozen. And I have slipped and continue to slip even now, within these lines that seek to give me a story, when in fact they are nothing, nothing of mine, nothing that has really begun or been truly fulfilled: just a tangled tangle that no one, not even who is writing at the moment, knows whether it contains the proper thread of a story or is it just a gagged pain, without salvation [...] It seems to me the ugly, evil self, but I still ask to forgive me love ... ”-“ The false life of adults ”(Elena Ferrante).
At the center of the book "The false life of adults" (La vita bugiarda degli adulti) is Giovanna, a girl on the verge of adolescence. Giovanni seeks her reflection on two pages of a city that fears and hates each other: Upper Naples, wearing a mask of elegance, and Lower Naples, the land of vulgarity and lasciviousness. She wanders from one side of the city to the other in search of truth, but neither side seems to give her an answer or salvation. In her desperate search, Giovanna will discover her parents ’double life, their deceptions and lies.
To cope with life and everyday life, people lie, above all they lie to themselves. In moments when guilt and shame threaten the conscience, when these feelings shake the convictions about the image we have of ourselves, lies or "beautiful tales" seem to help us to protect us from facing reality. Troubled youth, false and suffocating family ties, love, naked truth, betrayal, and not only marital, ill friendships, identity crises constitute the dough on which Ferrante challenges the myth of the happy family and accompanies us on this journey difficult to grow.
The New York Times writes: “The deep structure of the characters 'psyche is the same: love remains at the center of these girls' lives more than it should be; love is confused with sex; desire rather than blinds the characters, robs them of the ability to judge and puts this at its service. ”
The Book Reporter: "Ferrante pits class and value, religion and faith, loyalty and secrets, sexuality and virginity as ways to lose and gain power."
