The Italian Association of Physicians and Surgeons has called for a national blockade as the country faces increasing cases of Covid-19 and admissions to hospitals and intensive care units.
"If the trend continues, Italy will record another 10,000 deaths in a month," the association's president, Filippo Anelli, said on Sunday, November 8, warning that last week's figures "do not make us predict any good thing ".
"On average last week we registered 1000 patients hospitalized per day, 110 in intensive care, 25,000 in isolation at home and over 300 deaths per day," said Anelli.
He added:
"In a month, if this trend remains unchanged, we will have another 10,000 deaths and we will exceed the threshold of 5,000 beds in intensive care."
"The scenario that may come is dramatic, not only for the treatment of patients with Covid, but above all for the treatment of all patients with other diseases."
Italy is already in the time limit from 10 pm to 5 am, with bars and restaurants closing at 6 pm, while in certain areas there are even stricter restrictions.
Residents of the "red zone" regions - Lombardy, Piedmont, Valle d'Aosta and Calabria - can leave home only for health or work needs.
Those in "orange zones" are prohibited from leaving their cities except for work or health reasons.
Anelli further said:
"Drastic measures are needed, such as a total blockade," to avoid overcrowding in hospitals in late December, early January, with Covid-19 and flu patients.
According to the country's Ministry of Health, Italy registered 32,616 new daily cases and 331 deaths on Sunday.
