There is currently no shortage of eyelash serums on the market. However, beauty editors and dermatologists are often asked whether castor oil enhances eyelashes or not.
Doing a Google search for "castor oil as eyelash treatment" makes you even more confused to find out if it is worth painting your eyelashes with it or not.
Instead of a final answer, you get dozens of mixed and tangled results together.
InStyle turns to two experts to "discover the truth".
Asked dermatologists once and for all destroyed the famous beauty myth with a "NO".
Dr. Mona Gohara and Dr. Joshua Zeichner says there is no scientific evidence that castor oil helps make lashes longer.
It is unclear whether castor oil really promotes hair growth, or simply serves as a type of "softener", says Dr. Zeichner.
Doctors say that in some cases, people get an optical illusion that their eyelashes have grown, when in fact there is almost no change.
"The oil can act as a hair conditioner, protecting the hair shaft itself so that it looks thicker," explains Dr. Zeichner.
However, if you are determined to use it, even for the reason that a real eyelash serum can be more expensive, be sure to be very careful. Dr. Gohara says that using oils can block the eye glands, which can cause you problems.
If you have eczema, sensitive skin or allergies, Dr. Zeichner recommends not using castor oil on your lashes at all.
However, the good news is that any irritation you may experience while using castor oil on your eyelashes will disappear for a few days after you stop using it.
Also, if you use very small amounts, the worst thing that can happen is to spend a little money on a small bottle of oil and no other problems.
