Amsterdam boasts one of the most cyclist-friendly cities in the world. But even the Dutch capital has its limits.
Residents have complained that the views of some of the most beautiful canals are being damaged due to the accumulation of bicycles on the bridge railings, while people are forced to walk on the narrow sidewalks, or on the street.
As a result, authorities have placed wooden baskets with flowers to prevent cyclists from placing bicycles on the bridge.
"Because of the large number of bicycles parked on the bridge railings, pedestrians can no longer fit on the narrow sidewalks and have to walk on the road," a spokesman told the Guardian. "It creates insecure situations."
Amsterdam has more bicycles than people with 767 km of bicycle lanes. Such a phenomenon is widespread throughout the Netherlands. According to an official government report, the country has about 23 million bicycles, while the population is about 17 million.
