Millions of Europeans faced new restrictions on coronavirus as governments stepped up efforts to slow the rise in infections, as the World Health Organization reported a "very worrying" increase in Covid-19 cases in a week.
From Saturday evening, Paris and several other French cities imposed a limited blockade, which will last at least a month. England is banning family gatherings in the city and Italy’s most populous region is restricting bar openings and suspending sporting events. The need for action in France was deemed necessary because the country reported another record of new cases, with more than 32,000 infected in 24 hours.
In the Czech Republic, citizens staged protests against the wearing of masks, Ireland announced new strict restrictions, while Switzerland made it mandatory to wear the mask indoors, including cinemas and shops, and stressed that starting Monday, meetings with more than 15 people in public places are prohibited. In Switzerland, masks will be mandatory at train stations, airports and public transport.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel urged citizens to stay home when possible as 7,830 cases of infection appeared within 24 hours. Last week, the Netherlands closed bars and restaurants for a month as part of a series of measures to manage growing infections. Poland and Belgium also reported record daily cases.
European cases increased by 44%, according to the World Health Organization.
