Facebook has announced that it will remove any page or group representing the QAnon conspiracy group. The social media company, which also owns Instagram, said in a statement today:
"Starting today, we will remove any Facebook pages, groups and Instagram accounts that represent QAnon, even if they do not contain violent content."
"QAnon is a widespread conspiracy theorist who claims that there is a gang of Satan worshipers in government, business and the media, being fought by Donald Trump."
This conspiracy is also linked to "anti-vaccine" or 5G theories.
As of August 19, Facebook announced new measures to curb the spread of QAnon posts, but apparently, it has not had enough impact.
During August and September, Facebook removed over 1,500 pages and groups for QAnon that contained discussions about possible violence.
A Facebook spokesman said the measures and efforts made should be further strengthened, "but the work will take time and must continue in the coming days and weeks," he said.
"Our Risk Organizations Operations Team will continue to implement policies and detect such cases. We have been vigilant in implementing our policies and studying their impact on the platform, but we have seen some issues that led to today’s update.
For example, while we have removed content with QAnon that supports violence, we have seen other content in support of QAnon that supports other forms of violence and wrongdoing. "We aim to combat this in the most effective way with an update that strengthens and expands our applications, against the movement of conspiracy theories."
