Tests for Covid-19 that show results within 15–30 minutes will be distributed worldwide, potentially saving thousands of lives and slowing down the pandemic in poor and rich countries.
120 million rapid antigen tests, produced by two companies, will supply low- and middle-income countries. The tests will cost $ 5 or less. Tests that are similar to pregnancy tests - two blue dots appear when positive - will be examined by a health worker.
One of the tests, manufactured by the South Korean company, SD BioSensor, has just been approved by the World Health Organization, while the other, manufactured by the American company Abbott, is expected to be approved soon.
Companies are making 20% ??of their output available to low- and middle-income countries and 80% to the rest. WHO-approved rapid antigen tests will be easier to use in schools, universities and workplaces.
Companies claim that their tests are about 97% accurate, but this is in optimal condition. In real terms, the accuracy goes to 80% and 90%. There are rapid antigen tests available for sale online, but these are the first to meet WHO specifications.
