In an article for The Cut and the NY Mag, Emily wrote an essay entitled "Buying Myself Back," to show what it means to get your image back.
The essay revolves around topics like the use of a woman’s image and body.
She talks about the paradox of being a public face and the fact that she sees her face and body everywhere, even where she did not think it was possible or legal.
"I have learned more by looking at myself, through paparazzi lenses than in a mirror, and I have learned that my image, my reflection, is not mine," the model wrote.
Emily has been found several times in abnormal situations. Some time ago, a paparazzi sued the model because she posted a photo of her on Instagram Stories, a photo which was shot by the paparazzi in question.
At another point, a hacker revealed her private photos, which the model had sent to her boyfriend.
However, the most disturbing moment Emrata mentions mentioned in the essay is a 2012 photo shoot, in Catskills, at the home of photographer Jonathan Leder. Driven by her agent, Emrata had agreed to take part in this unpaid shoot for a magazine she had never heard of, to make a name for herself in the industry and to meet professionals in the field, a common practice in industry, especially for emerging models.
"When he put old-fashioned lingerie on a kitchen chair, I began to understand what kind of girl he wanted me to be. My agent had not mentioned that the filming would be internal, but I did not bother. I had shot countless underwear before. ”
After having dinner with the make-up artist hired for the shoot, Leder started shooting some polaroid photos of Ratajkowski in lingerie, but not happy with the result, and after a few glasses of wine, they continued with the nude photos.
I have done nude photos before, always by men. Many photographers and agents have told me that my body was one of the things that made me stand out among my colleagues. My body felt like superpower. I was confident naked, fearless and proud.
In the comments below the New York Mag post, as well as those below @ emrata's post, there are many who argue that basically Emily is making a lot of noise about nothing when she is the first to post pictures with underwear or nude on her profile. her on Instagram, but this is where the crux of the matter lies: it is Ratajkowki himself who decides what to publish, what to show, when and to whom, at least as far as its platforms are concerned.
The release of her intimate photos, the publication without her consent of some books portraying her naked, creating a work of art that starts from an image of her, are all a violation of her privacy, a constant appropriation of her body , who, though now famous and desired, remains hers and hers alone.
