There are dozens of reasons why a woman would prefer not to discuss pregnancy, especially in front of millions of strangers on television. However, in 2008, Mariah Carey, pregnant but no one knew, was a guest on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" and was somehow forced to talk about pregnancy. For New York Magazine, Carey recalls the moment as "extremely unpleasant."
In the interview, Ellen addressed the rumors of pregnancy at the time and told Mariah to drink champagne to test whether or not she was pregnant. "I can't believe you did this to me, Ellen," Carey said. "Let's raise a toast that you are not pregnant," DeGeneres replied. Eventually, Carey said it was "too early" to drink. "You are pregnant," DeGeneres responded, though Mariah denied it.
The interview was embarrassing for the very fact that Mariah had experienced an abortion before, so she was reluctant to talk publicly about a new pregnancy. After the interview with Ellen, she had an abortion again. Twelve years later, Carey told the New York Magazine that the interview was "extremely unpleasant."
"I was not ready to tell anyone that I had a miscarriage," she said, referring to Ellen's staff . "It's not that I want to push someone who is already on the brink, but I really did not enjoy that moment."
Mariah's story again brings to mind a delicate topic: Why should a woman NEVER be asked if she is pregnant.
