Dior presented in Puglia, Italy, the latest Cruise 2021 collection, which offered a bohemian and slightly medieval feel. The striking detail was the use of the rare embroidery technique, which dates back to the 15th century.
In the collection, butterflies were set with Tombolo style embroidery. Tombolo is a type of lace that requires an extremely meticulous technique and is part of the cultural heritage of the region.
Dior worked with local artisans of the Puglia region to create butterfly details. According to the fashion house, Tombolo lace is in danger of extinction as a technique.
To achieve this style, the motifs are first drawn on paper and then sewn with wooden spools. Creating butterflies requires 15 hours of work.
The fashion house collaborated with Marilena Sparasci, one of the only embroiderers in the country.
