If someone were to ask you how you think of a "modern-day bunker", you would probably imagine a room full of bags, essentials and canned food. But companies around the world are investing to make the "21st century bunker" much different from what we imagine.
These companies are trying to meet the demand - of 1% of the world's people - to have a structure that protects them from any danger, be it pandemics, asteroids or World War III.
"The bunker of the father or grandfather is not comfortable," Robert Vicino, a real estate entrepreneur and CEO of Vivos, who builds and manages such shelters, told CNN. "Their bunkers were gray, made of metal and looked like ships or something military. Humanity cannot survive for so long in such a gloomy environment. ?
Many people with global influence have built such structures to house the family and staff. Bill Gates is said to have protective bunkers on all of his properties.
Gary Lynch, general manager of Rising S based in Texas, says sales of the company?s underground bunkers increased by 700% in 2016, compared to 2015.
The company's bunkers are designed to last for generations, can hold food for at least a year, and are earthquake-resistant.
Such fortified structures are built to withstand a nuclear attack and come equipped with energy systems, cleaning systems and filtration. Some of them have kindergartens to meet their food needs.
One of these structures, Vivos xPoint, in South Dakota, consists of 575 ushtarate bunkers and is currently being converted into a place that can accommodate 5,000 people and serve as a mini-city, with medical clinics, gyms, kindergartens, houses etc.
All facilities contain luxury equipment and although they may be considered unnecessary, entrepreneurs say that "these shelters may need to operate for a year or more" so it is best to be comfortable.
