The Donald Trump administration has recently finalized a regulation that overturns decisions made during Barack Obama's administration to combat sexual discrimination in health care for transgender people.
Under the new regulation, the Department of Health and Human Services will return to the interpretation of sexual discrimination, referring to the meaning of the word "sex as male and female and as defined by biology."
During the Obama administration, gender was defined as the inner feeling of being male, female, combination, or none of these. The change in the Trump administration will allow health care providers and insurance companies that receive federal funding to refuse to provide or cover health care related to the transition of transgender Americans.
Several organizations have announced they will challenge the change. The Human Rights Campaign announced it would file a lawsuit. The American Civil Liberties Union also said it would sue.
During the presidency of former President Obama, a hospital could be required to perform transition procedures if the institution provided that type of treatment.
The announcement of the new decision came on the 4th anniversary of the gruesome event in Orlando, Florida, where one person shot dead 49 people at a nightclub for gay people.
