The European Commission has suggested to European member states to reopen their external borders to non-member countries on July 1.
Currently, the European Commission calls on members who are not part of Schengen to coordinate on how to open external borders.
"International travel is the key to tourism and business, and we need to reunite with our families and friends," said Commissioner Ylva Johansson.
The lifting of border restrictions also depends on EU member states, which are expected to open their internal borders on June 15. Meanwhile, the deadline for reopening the European Union's external borders is currently being extended from June 15th to June 30th.
She also said that the opening of borders will not be applied in all countries equally, as where the Covid-19 situation is still delicate, preventive measures will continue.
The European Union has recommended that borders be vacated for some of the Western Balkan countries, specifically in countries such as Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, northern Macedonia and Serbia.
The European Commission's communication states that the epidemiological situation related to coronavirus pandemics in the Western Balkans is the same or better than in the European Union.
Based on this, for the citizens of the Western Balkans, the borders are expected to open on July 1.
