What is happening today in America is far from us (Albanians). Racism has deep roots there, and American history would not be enough to understand the truth of what is currently happening there. Today's protests are just the tip of the iceberg. Thankfully, there are a number of documentaries, series and movies that will make you understand even more clearly what is going on there, what it means to be racist or to experience it.
# 1. 13th
The Netflix documentary became so popular that it was all published on YouTube so that people understood the effects of the 13th Amendment that led to the big problem of slavery and mass imprisonment there.
# 2. American Son
This film is inspired by events that take place in the community of people of color during their daily lives. At the end of it you will understand what a challenge it is to raise children of color and invest in them by being empathetic.
# 3. Dark Girls
"Dark Girls" will make you understand what drama and behavior women of color face all over the world. Their efforts to whiten skin color in the hope of a better life will make you revolt with what is happening in the world!
# 4. When They See Us
Another series to watch on Netflix is "When they see us." Director Ava DuVernay, this time tells the story of about 5 Americans unjustly accused of raping and killing a woman in Central Park.
# 5.I Am Not Your Negro
Based on the unfinished manuscript of James Baldwin, who would delve deeply into the lives and murders of his three close friends: Medgar Evers, Malcom X and Martin Luther King Jr. "I am not your negro" will make you better understand the connection between human rights and the "Black Lives Matter" movement.
# 6. Selma
"Selma", the historical drama of 2014 directed by Ava DuVernay, reflects the discrimination against people of color in the right to vote. Despite the fact that the Law on Human Rights legally decreed the South, in certain countries, discrimination was frightening, making it very difficult for people of color to register to vote.
