For Christmas, Claudia Borgogno's son, an Italian accountant, gave her mother a 100-euro ticket, which gave her the opportunity to win a Pablo Picasso painting.
51,140 tickets were sold for the big event, the proceeds of which will go to provide water for the villages of Madagascar and Cameroon. Tickets were sold in more than 100 countries around the world, with most of the buyers coming from France, the United States, Switzerland and Italy.
Organizers estimate the painting "Nature Morte" worth 1 million euros and is the smallest of the 300 works of Picasso owned by David Nahmad, art collector.
Claudia Borgogno said she adores Picasso and the fact that she will be able to keep a painting of him at home is fantastic. Her son, Lorenzo Naso, said it was "the best decision of his life".
"When I got home and told him he had won, he just said, 'Please don't make fun of me,'" he said.
