Yesterday (Friday), the European Union recommended extending the border closure by another 30 days, at least until June 15, 2020.
"The situation remains delicate in both Europe and the world," the European Commission said, adding that extending the border closure was necessary to reduce the risk of the spread of Covid-19 in Europe.
For the first time, the traffic ban was lifted in mid-March and extended until mid-May. The new decision, which closes the borders by June 15, excludes some categories that may travel during this time, such as; EU citizens, foreigners with permanent residence permits in member states, medical staff, the group of experts required, seasonal workers and employees of transport companies.
In a second moment, when the situation is more secure, EU Commissioner Ylva Johansson announced a two-stage opening: first the removal of controls at the internal borders and then the restrictions on the external borders.
