The WHO Representative in our country, Raul Gonzales spoke at length about the current situation of coronavirus in Albania and responded to all the dilemmas that have been circulating recently regarding testing, the myth of the highest mortality in the region, as well as the study on with the tuberculosis vaccine.
As a start, the WHO representative said that the performance in numbers in this situation that we are in is very good in Albania.
"We have seen an increase in the first few days, from 5, 6 cases the number started to go up to over 20 in 24 hours and then we started to have a decrease again with 16 cases per day, or only 6 cases as happened yesterday. The performance is e good!"
Regarding the high mortality rate he said:
"Why is mortality said to be high in Albania? This is not true. The death toll is 22, which means 7.3 per 1 million inhabitants. Greece has 7.6 per 1 million, Slovenia 14, Bosnia 9.4, Serbia 8.7, "Northern Macedonia 13 and let's not talk about Spain, which reaches 297 per 1 million, France 156 or Italy, 285. It's just not true! Albania does not have the highest mortality rate in the region."
Regarding the discussion regarding the tests performed, the WHO representative said that tests are being performed and will continue to be performed for suspected cases. Gonzales said this testing policy is working, explaining that mass testing is not to stop the epidemic, but to see how many people can go to work without endangering themselves and others.
In parallel with the study of the tuberculosis vaccine as a vaccine that may be effective for Covid-19, it was said that countries that have used this vaccine early on are less affected by this virus.
"We do not have such a study yet. Some have noticed that in countries with higher proportions of people vaccinated with BCG, but this should be seen if there is any logical line. So there is still no clear study that proves that this vaccine has the capacity to make people more resistant to coronavirus, "he explained.
