Yesterday, on Facebook, Prime Minister Rama announced that "rent payments by small businesses and registered family members who have stopped working due to coronavirus will be banned." This measure also benefits students living on rent. "Landlords will be prohibited from requiring monthly payment to these entities or will be penalized with a fine up to five times the value of their rent," Rama wrote.
Earlier in the evening, the prime minister clarified that the two-month lease, suspended for certain categories, would be proportionately repaid by the tenants after May 31 under an agreement between the tenant and the landlord.
So it's not about a two-month rent forgiveness, but a freeze on payment. Tenants, in agreement with the landlord, will repay the rent for two months gradually after May 31.
The prime minister added that there will be specific treatment for individuals who have a livelihood from rents.
