A US government official announced yesterday that the first volunteer in the Covid-19 vaccine test was injected with the experimental dose.
The testing is being conducted by the Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute in Seattle and consists of 45 young and healthy volunteers who will be vaccinated.
The official spoke to the Associated Press about the testing, on condition of anonymity. Vaccine testing has not been officially announced.
The vaccine was developed by the company Moderna and The National Institutes of Health, which also funded the testing. Researchers want to understand the vaccines have serious side effects and if not, go ahead with larger-scale testing to understand the efficacy. It takes 12-18 months to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a new vaccine.
