A Japanese woman has been diagnosed with coronavirus for the second time just weeks after she was declared cured.
The woman, working as a bus driver, is the first person outside China to be twice diagnosed. 180 cases have been confirmed in Japan.
In China, there have been several cases where healers have become infected again or reappeared, but this is the first case outside the country where coronavirus originated.
A woman in Osaka, in her forties, was diagnosed a second time Wednesday after complaining of a sore throat and chest. She was infected with coronavirus for the first time in early February.
"When you become infected, the virus can become dormant and exhibit minimal symptoms. The condition worsens if the virus goes to the lungs, ?said Philkip Tierno Jr. a lecturer in microbiology and pathology at NYU School of Medicine. "I'm not sure this case is not two-phase, like anthrax."
This means that the disease may appear to have healed before it reappears.
Coronavirus is spreading rapidly throughout the world. There are about 80,000 affected and 2800 dead. Most cases are in China, but new confirmations in South Korea and Italy have increased the chances of a pandemic.
