In Italy, the number of people infected with the Covid-19 coronavirus has exceeded 100, with only 44 cases confirmed today, according to local authorities (via CNN). Most of those affected are in the northern regions of Lombardy (where there are 89 cases), Veneto, Emilia Romagna and Piedmont.
The chaotic situation forced local authorities to close schools, businesses and restaurants, as well as to cancel sports events and religious services. The mayor of Milan, the capital of the Lombardy region, closed public offices.
A 78-year-old man died from the Covid-19 coronavirus in Veneto. Subsequently, a 77-year-old woman who was found to be affected by the virus also died. It is still unclear if it was the symptoms of the virus that caused the lady's death. As of these moments (Sunday, February 23), these are the two confirmed victims.
Hundreds of residents who had been in contact with people infected with the virus were isolated while awaiting test results. Civil protection crews set up camp outside a hospital in Veneto to examine medical staff.
Veneto officials said Saturday that the virus transmission is the same as the flu, so trying to track down anyone coming from China was not the most effective control measure, as you can get infected by anyone.
