On Monday, Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon and owner of The Washington Post, announced he would donate $ 10 billion to save the environment. The news comes less than a month after Amazon threatened to fire employees who spoke about the company's role in exacerbating the climate crisis.
Bezos Earth Fund will begin distributing the money this summer.
"I want to work alongside others to amplify the ways that work and find new ways to overcome the devastating impact that climate change has had on the planet we call home," Bezos said in an Instagram post.
"This initiative will fund scientists, activists, NGOs - any effort to preserve and protect nature. We can save the earth. But everyone, big companies, small companies, states, world organizations and individuals should strive.
The announcement contradicts Amazon's actions against employees who spoke publicly about the climate crisis. In January, The Guardian revealed that a series of employees who sought some kind of initiative from the company to combat climate change were threatened with layoffs if they did not remain silent.
Bezos is the richest man in the world with an estimated wealth of about $ 129.9 billion.
