As of today, the Trump administration will implement new rules restricting pregnant women's travel to the United States with the intent to be born on US territory.
Representatives of US consulates around the world will have more power as of Friday. If they think that a pregnant woman is traveling to the United States to give birth there, they may be denied a visa. However, representatives have no right to ask a woman whether she is pregnant or not.
This change seeks to diminish maternity tourism, thanks to which US-born children immediately acquire US citizenship.
"By ending this dishonest practice, we will put an end to endemic abuse and consequently protect the United States from the dangers it has created," White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham said.
Asked by reporters what dangers American children born to foreign women pose, the secretary did not have an answer.
