After Harry and Meghan announced that they would step down from their roles as members of the royal family and work to be financially independent, they all became curious about the couple's next move.
Today, it was revealed that Meghan has signed a contract with Disney to duplicate one or more of their projects. But I seemed to gain nothing from this collaboration. All profits will go to Elephants Whitout Borders, an organization that tracks and protects animals from hunting.
Meghan's contract was rumored during the royal family's tense talks shortly before Christmas. The couple were accused by other members of having "signed contracts with other firms, including Disney." However, there is no evidence that Meghan or Harry have agreed to commercial collaborations that benefit them; they do not pocket anything from the many philanthropic work they do.
Currently, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex earn no income from the work they do, as they are prohibited by law; at least according to the present structure. In their new site, Sussexroyal.com, the couple write that they "value the opportunity to earn their living," which they will do when they are financially independent.
"This structure has precedents and applies to current members of the royal family who support the monarchy and have full-time foreign affairs," the site reads.
For example, Princess Beatrice or Princess Eugenie have traditional jobs that bring them income. This is exactly what Harry and Meghan plan to do.
After the transition, they will no longer receive taxpayer-funded Sovereign Grant money. This fund only covers 5% of expenses and has never been used for personal purchases, they point out on their website. Most of their income comes from the Duchy of Cornwall, a private property of Prince Charles. So far, it has not been hinted that even these funds will be cut.
