The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced that they would relinquish their roles as royalty and spend most of their time between the United Kingdom and North America.
In a statement from Buckingham Palace, the couple said they plan to "form a new and progressive role within the institution." They also said they will work to "be financially independent."
The statement, also posted on the couple's Instagram, said they made the decision "after months of reflection and discussion."
?We plan to step down from our roles as members of the royal family and will work to be financially independent while fully supporting Her Majesty the Queen.
"Thanks to your support, especially in recent years, we have been prepared to make this change."
They write that in the future they will balance living between the United Kingdom and North America as they "remain loyal to the Queen, the Commonwealth and charities."
"This geographical balance will allow us to teach our son the love of the royal tradition and give us ample room to open a new chapter in our lives, including our new charity."
In a documentary released last year, Meghan said motherhood was particularly difficult because of the overwhelming interest in tabloids and newspapers.
Prince Harry said he and his brother "are taking different paths."
In October, I appeared to sue The Daily Mail, as the editorial office unjustly published personal letters that she sent to her father.
Over Christmas, the couple took a break from royal obligations to spend some time with their son, Archie, who was born in May 2019.
