'I used to be an engineer and the firm had sent us to a deep mountain village in Puka. I remember there were roads where the car was going and you had to walk for many hours. The captain who would deal with me told me to sleep by him, that the way back to the car was too far. I had a bad ancestry to sleep with him, living alone with his wife in a broken roof house in the middle of nothing.
I started walking, but I confused the way and it became dark. I called my friends to guide me, but after being told how badly I was confused, they told me it was best to sleep at a nearby church. I was assured that the priest would receive me well. I did, but the priest was not there and the church door slammed open. I stepped inside to avoid them, afraid of the wildlife, and decided to lie on the floor to sleep. It was dark, I had no light and I was dying of fear. Only the moon was shining outside. However, as I did and as I was about to fall asleep, it seemed to me that someone was opening the door slowly.
I remained speechless and could hardly hold my breath. I asked who it was, but no one answered and the doorbell stopped. I remained speechless until the noise started again! I got up with all my might, pushed the door and saw a black shadow, the man or the bear I never understood. He pushed me hard, threw me to the ground and then left.
I got up and ran in the middle of the darkness to get my feet. I unwittingly slipped into a stream or river and it seemed to me that if I passed by it, that shadow would no longer follow me. As I walked in the water, I felt as if I were trampling human bodies, bellies, hands, and feet. I made my way back, the shoreline I saw again the shadow that awaited me so I continued on my way ... I ran in the dark until I reached the return home to the master.
He and my wife asked me what had happened and when I told them I had stopped at church to sleep, they were terrified. When I told them what had happened to me they told me that the area in the village was known as a cursed place and that many people had long since disappeared. There was something in that brook that today only those who have passed know how to tell. Others just don't believe it! '
