Megan Fox spoke of her "deep insecurities" admitting that she struggles with body image, despite what people consider very attractive.
"Yes, I have body dysmorphia. I have deep insecurities, "Megan said in an interview with British GQ.
"We can see someone and think, 'He is such a beautiful man. How simple their life is. ' "They probably do not feel that way about themselves." She explained.
But what is dysmorphia?
Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a mental disorder in which a person is obsessed with an imaginary physical defect or a small defect that others often cannot see, WebMD explains. As a result, people with this disorder see themselves as “ugly” and often avoid social exposure or resort to plastic surgery in an attempt to improve their appearance.
BDD has several characteristics similar to eating disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorders. The most common concerns include:
1. Skin: wrinkles, scars, acne and blemishes.
2. Hair: dry hair, lack of hair, etc.
3. Facial features: nose, shape or size of a feature, etc.
4. Body weight.
5. Other areas: penis size, muscles, breasts, thighs, buttocks, scent, etc.
What causes the body dysmorphic disorder?
The exact cause of BDD is not known. One theory suggests that the disorder involves a problem with the size or function of certain areas of the brain that process information about the appearance of the body. The fact that BDD often occurs in people with other mental health disorders, such as depression and anxiety, further supports a biological basis for the disorder.
Other factors that can affect the development or cause of the disorder are:
- traumatic experiences or emotional conflicts during childhood
- low self-esteem
- parents critical of a person's appearance
- pressure from peers or society
