Norway (population: 5.7 million) beats the US (342 million) to top the medals table at the Winter Olympics

Norway topped the medal table at the Winter Olympics with 18 gold medals and 41 total, leaving behind the USA, which came in second with 12 gold medals and 33 total.
The Norwegians' success was historic, as the 18 gold medals constitute the highest record ever won by a country at a Winter Olympics, with skier Johannes Hosflot Klaebo winning six gold medals alone.
Experts attribute Norway's dominance to its strong tradition in winter sports, investment in sports and emphasis on children's participation and development, rather than early competition.
