Pizza may be more heart-healthy than you think! Everyone loves cheese, but many tend to cut it out of their diet because of its high levels of saturated fat and sodium.

"Certain foods, such as those high in saturated fat and sodium, can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease," says cardiologist Cheng-Han Chen. On the other hand, a diet high in vegetables, high in fiber and low in saturated fat may be beneficial for heart health.

But there is still good news for cheese lovers. "Cheese can be part of a heart-healthy diet," says Dr. Chen, adding that there are things to consider when consuming cheese and its effect on the heart.

In other words, cardiologists are convinced that mozzarella cheese is the best for heart health. "It's a good source of protein and calcium, and even contains probiotics that can affect gut and immune health," he explained. "Fresh mozzarella is also lower in saturated fat and sodium than other cheeses.

According to the US Department of Agriculture, 28 grams of mozzarella cheese contains 6.29 grams of protein, 143 milligrams of calcium, 138 milligrams of sodium and 3.94 grams of saturated fat.

Because mozzarella is lower in sodium and saturated fat, it's a better option than other cheeses, not only for heart health, but for bone health as well. When focusing on heart health, you should avoid, or at least minimize, the consumption of highly processed cheeses.
