Lifestyle plays a critical role, and research has linked alcohol, smoking, estrogen exposure and certain dietary patterns - including Western diets rich in processed foods - to an increased risk of breast cancer.

They also point out that certain nutritional patterns, such as the Mediterranean diet, reduce the risk of breast cancer.

Foods that help reduce the risk of breast cancer

1. Green leafy vegetables
2. Citrus fruits
3. Fish like salmon and sardines
4. Forest fruits
5. Fermented foods like yogurt, sauerkraut etc.
6. Alium vegetables - garlic, onions and leeks
7. Peaches, apples and pears
8. Vegetables such as cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli
9. Beans and chickpeas
10. Herbs and spices, such as parsley, rosemary, oregano, thyme, turmeric, ginger, etc.

What to avoid

1. Alcohol
2. Fast
food 3. Fried food
4. Meat processed like bacon, sausage
5. Added sugar
6. Processed carbohydrates
