If you are one of the millions of people suffering from acne, even after using many different creams, medicines, cleansers and medicines, this can be a hope on the horizon.
At 38, Winlevi is the first new acne medicine.
The Food and Drug Administration just approved a new cream called Winlevi. It is the first approved acne medicine since the introduction of Accutane (isotretinoin) in 1982.
So how does it work and what makes it innovative?
Current acne medications on the market rely on antibiotics, benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, azelaic acid, dapsone and vitamin A derivatives known as retinoids to quench acne.
Winlevi is the first to use a completely new asset: 1% Clascoteron (Clascoteron).
Clascoterone is a local androgen receptor inhibitor, meaning it blocks testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) when applied to the skin. The ingredient is also used to treat hair loss.
Androgens in your skin are responsible for the production of sebum (oil / fat) and can lead to inflammation, which creates and worsens acne.
Cassiopea, the pharmaceutical company behind Winlevi, noted that while the exact mechanism of action of Clascoterone is not yet known, the cream has been shown to reduce acne damage in clinical trials in girls and boys aged 12 years and older.
Klaskoteron is the first androgen blocker for acne, which works in both men and women. Studies show that Klaskoteron is safe and effective.
"This medicine fills a long gap in skin therapy. "After 40 years, it offers a new, much-anticipated, complementary approach to treating acne," says dermatologist Michael Gold, Investigator and Medical Director at Gold Skin Care Center and Tennessee Clinical Research Center.
Do not call your dermatologist yet. Winlevi will be available, starting next year.
