Dopamine is an important brain chemical that affects our mood and motivation. Recently, the term is being used to describe the positive mood that clothing can induce and is quite popular on TikTok.
#dopaminedressing is the newest fashion trend ruling TikTok, where people are opting for colorful outfits, voluminous details and other elements.
The hashtag has more than 25.8 million views on the app. The psychology of fashion Dr. Dawnn Karen, who coined the term, swears it's the key to promoting happiness through clothing.
"Usually, we dress for external factors - the weather, other people, special events. During the pandemic, a change occurred. With no one there to tell you what to wear, you give yourself permission to find styles that make you happy," Karen said on the "Today" show. "It's not a panacea, but I've seen people who are usually too shy to wear a colorful outfit and be more active, more lively, more free.”
In fact, "a person's whole mood changes when they wear clothes that represent who they really are," she added.
People on TikTok have embraced the trend by choosing to wear colorful clothes, surprising combinations and eye-catching details.
