Covid life expectancy caused the largest drop in life expectancy since World War II, according to data in 29 countries, most in Europe and the US.
The largest decline in life expectancy was in men in the US, with a decline of 2.2 years compared to 2019 levels, followed by Lithuanian men (1.7).
The decline in life expectancy exceeded those recorded during the time of the disintegration of the Eastern Bloc in Central and Eastern Europe, according to research by scientists at the Leverhulme Center for Demographic Science in Oxford.
The university said most life expectancy reductions in various countries could be linked to official deaths from Covid. Nearly 5 million deaths caused by the new coronavirus have been recorded so far, a Reuters report shows.
In the US, the increase in mortality was mainly between people of working age and those under 60, while in Europe, deaths among people over 60 contributed more significantly to the increase in mortality.
"The fact that our results highlight such a huge impact that is directly attributable to Covid-19 shows how shocking it has been for many countries," said Dr. Ridhi Kashyap, co-author of the study published in the International Journal of Epidemiology.
