Additionally, this constant search for a connection drains your phone's battery and can overload ground cell towers, as "your device bounces quickly from one tower to another due to the speed and altitude of the aircraft."

While the chances of the phone causing a significant problem in flight are minimal, interference from some devices can disrupt sensitive equipment or communications between the cockpit and ground control.

"Putting your phone on airplane mode is a simple but important step to ensure the safety of everyone on board. This is a particularly important step during landing and takeoff,” said Rajagopal, adding that “the radio altimeter operates at a frequency of 4 Gigahertz, which is close to 5G cell phone signals.”

Electromagnetic radiation emitted by phones may not directly harm passengers, but prolonged exposure to electronic devices can increase stress levels, disrupt sleep cycles and damage vision due to blue light, experts say.

"More importantly, not following safety protocols can contribute to increased anxiety among passengers and crew," said Dr. Maneendra.

Doctors recommend that you use this time to clear your mind, relax, read or meditate, activities that can reduce stress and improve mental well-being.
