Brad Pitt has spoken in the past about a problem he has with social environments, especially with the holidays. He tries to remember people, to recognize their faces, and is afraid that people have a wrong opinion of him: that he is restrained, inaccessible, immersed in himself.
But the truth is that he wants to remember the people he meets and he is ashamed that he can not. He has not been officially diagnosed, but thinks he may be suffering from a specific condition: prosopagnosia , an inability to recognize the faces of people otherwise known as facial blindness.
"No one believes me!" he said in an interview with GQ. "I want to meet another [who has the same problem as me."
In the past, exactly in 2013, the Hollywood star said that many people may think he is not respecting them, but he actually does not remember their faces.
The term prosopagnosia comes from the Greek words for "face" and "lack of knowledge". Depending on the degree of damage, some people with prosopagnosti may only have difficulty recognizing a familiar face; others will not be able to distinguish between unfamiliar faces, while others may not be able to distinguish between a face and an object.
Some people with this disorder are unable to recognize their face.
Prosopagnosia is not related to memory dysfunction, memory loss, visual impairment or learning disabilities and is thought to be the result of abnormalities or damage to certain areas of the brain related to facial perception and memory. But it can also be present at birth.
This rare condition is thought to affect 2% of the global population and there is no cure. Treatment focuses on helping people with this condition find coping mechanisms to better identify individuals.
