The new variant in the UK can be up to 30% more deadly than the previous virus.
In a press release, Patrick Vallance, a doctor, scientist and clinical pharmacologist in the UK who has been serving as the Government's Chief Scientific Adviser since March 2018, said the new variant, which was believed to be simply the most transmissible, is likely to be even more deadly.
In his statement (via Guardian), Vallance said that with the old version, for age groups over 60, 10 per 1000 inhabitants passed away, while with the new version, 13 or 14 people change.
He said that we are expected to see this pace in different age groups. Vallance pointed out that there is uncertainty about these numbers, but there appears to be an increase in mortality as well as transmissibility. In terms of severity and mortality, he said data on hospitalized patients resulted in the same for both variants.
However, with anyone who has tested positive, there is evidence of an increased risk if they are infected with the new variant.
Two days ago, the World Health Organization announced that a variant of the coronavirus in the UK has been detected in at least 60 countries, but this variant is not the only one circulating .
