The World Health Organization recently published the report on the most deadly diseases for the period 2019-2020, stating that 7 of the 10 leading death diseases globally are non-communicable diseases.
Heart disease has remained the leading cause of death globally for the past 20 years. However, now this group of diseases is killing more people than ever before. The number of deaths from heart disease has increased by more than 2 million since 2000, to almost 9 million in 2019. Heart disease represents 16% of total deaths from all causes.
Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia are among the top 10 causes of death worldwide, ranking 3rd in both America and Europe for 2019. Women are disproportionately affected: globally, 65% of deaths by Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia are women.
Diabetes deaths increased by 70% worldwide between 2000 and 2019, with an 80% increase in male deaths.
