What is cyberchondria?
Cyberchondria (cyberchondria) is the unfounded escalation of concerns about common symptoms referred to in internet search results. With the spread of the internet and free information, which are just a click away from us, the number of cases of people experiencing cyberchondria has increased. In other words, it is an anxiety that has its genesis in Google searches.
Various studies have shown that a good portion of people experience anxiety when searching for information about certain symptoms on Google. Just look for the "causes of headaches" (which can be simply the lack of coffee) and come across a lot of information that says "you may have cancer or other serious diseases." There are times when these people refuse medical treatments from specialists, because of the information they read online.
Reasons why we worry more and more about our health:
1 - The stories we read: Thanks to social media, today it is easier to find out which person suffers from what.
2 - Negative information: During evolution, for survival, the human brain adapted to be more sensitive to negative information than positive.
3 - (Bad) free information: According to an article in the New York Times, some websites that appear when you are looking for a certain symptom are likely to show you the worst case scenario and scare you about their financial benefits.
4 - Worrying Living: Studies show that focusing on goals and achievements set towards ourselves make our lives and daily lives more stressful.
What to do when experiencing a cyberchondria "attack"?
1) Do not be ashamed of yourself: Do not pretend that you are not experiencing anxiety. Talk to a friend or someone you trust.
