The Pentagon released three videos on Monday showing U.S. Navy pilots spotting unidentified flying objects, also known as UFOs (Unidentified Flying Object). For the first time, the videos were released by the New York Times in 2017 and show cluttered objects moving at speed.
The Pentagon - the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense - describes the facilities as "unexplained air phenomena". The footage was released to "clear up any misconceptions circulating and clarify whether the videos were true or not," the Department of Defense said in a statement.
The statement clarified that the videos circulated unauthorized and that "the aerial phenomena observed in the video remain unidentified".
One of the videos shows an incident in 2004 where Marine pilots encountered a 40-foot-long object about 50 feet above the water, according to the New York Times; the other two videos belong to 2015 and show strange objects in the air.
