A full 42.8 million people have visited Birmingham for years as a result of Peaky Blinders' tremendous success.
"Peaky Blinders," the crime drama that tells the story of a mafia family through the world wars, turned into an indisputable hit for the BBC and Netflix. Currently, the fifth season is airing and according to tourism institutions, the series has caused a boom in English city tourism. According to the figures, 42.8 million people visited Birmingham in 2018, a 26% increase from 2013 when the first season aired.
Although influenced by a number of factors, the biggest burden is on "screen tourism," with tourists visiting destinations they've seen on television or cinema. The BBC series can be viewed in 183 countries thanks to Netflix and international viewers reach 1.1 million, a 19% increase. Visitors spent £ 17m on series-related activities like bars or museums.
"The Peaky Effect has gained inertia, tours and events in the West Midlands regarding the series are booked months in advance," said West Midlands Mayor Andy Street. "The region is being visited by record numbers of tourists and many want to explore the places that appear in the series."
However, "Peaky Blinders" events take place in Birmingham, but the hangovers are in Yorkshire, Liverpool and Manchester.
