Do you have an inner voice? Not everyone has it

Do you say to yourself, "Do not forget the milk" before leaving the house and then, when you return home without the milk, you say to yourself "How can you be so forgetful?" Do you have a "conversation with yourself"? continuous during the day?

Many people use some form of communication to organize and focus their thoughts. However, it turns out that some others do not have this kind of internal monologue at all.

Russell Hurlburt is Professor of Psychology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. For decades, he has been experimenting with people’s inner experiences, their thoughts, feelings, and emotions.

His tests started a long time ago. As a graduate student in the early 1970s, Hurlburt began to wonder how scientists could investigate the intact inner experiences of subjects, experiences that are in your current consciousness, before the brain tries to make sense or t 'assign them some kind of interpretation.

"The object of my research is not to explore inner speech or inner monologue or whatever you want to call it, but to explore your experience as it really is," says Hurlburt.

Hurlburt, who has engineering experience, designed and patented a beeper (device that emits short, loud sounds as a signal) that delivered signals at irregular intervals. Whenever the device emitted sound, it asked subjects to make notes of their experiences at that moment. They were instructed to try and clarify what was going on in their minds at certain moments.

The device emitted sounds only a few times. This was intentional, so that the research subjects forgot that they had the equipment and thus, did not "contaminate" the processes of thinking things about the experiment.

Later, researchers asked students questions to better understand what they thought when the device sounded. Were they visualizing something? Did they have any emotions? This line of inquiry is called Descriptive Experience Sampling (DES).

In his research, he found that most subjects tried to articulate the way they were talking to themselves. When he asked them specific words or sentences, many of them did not know what to explain. His study showed that some subjects talked to themselves about 26% of the time they were taken into the study, but many of them experienced no internal monologue at all.

Scientists are still skeptical. Some research shows that people often use this internal verbalization when they are under pressure. People who report internal monologue tend to perceive voices as their own. This personal conversation generally has a familiar rhythm and tone, although the voice may change depending on the situation.

But what causes the inner monologue?
