According to the World Happiness Report for 2024, Finland is the happiest country in the world! For the seventh consecutive year, the Gallup Poll finds this country holding the crown of leadership. The report was published on International Day of Happiness using surveys of over 100,000 people living in 143 different countries. Participants were asked to rate their current life satisfaction on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 representing maximum satisfaction. The researchers evaluated data such as social support, gross domestic product (GDP), life expectancy, freedom and trust in government for each country to help with the final results.
Taking these factors into account, Finland came out on top in terms of happiness.
Why is Finland the happiest country in the world?
While some of the factors contributing to Finland's high ranking above speak to government institutions and economic realities, others are more closely related to the Finnish approach to life and concepts of happiness rooted in Nordic culture.
In particular, the Finns embrace a concept called sisu, which literally means "resistance" or "persistence". In practice, this will show how to challenge yourself to discover deeper "reserves" of strength whenever you want to give up, drawing on the positive experiences of the past.
The social support of Finns is another reason why the country continues to rank so highly. According to the "Good Life" Index, 96% of Finns believe they know someone they can rely on in case of need.
Also, the mass use of saunas affects the general life satisfaction, happiness and social feelings of Finns. In a country of 5.5 million inhabitants, where there are approximately 3.3 million saunas, this clearly shows the popularity of this relaxation method.
