Baking soda is best known as the ingredient that helps cakes and doughs rise, but its uses go far beyond the kitchen. This inexpensive and common product can absorb unpleasant odors, remove light stains, and soften dirt on a variety of surfaces.
Below are some of the most useful ways to use baking soda at home. However, it should be borne in mind that it is not a disinfectant and does not replace special products for deep cleaning. For everyday dirt, however, it is a practical, economical and very effective solution.
1. Refresh the mattress

If your mattress has started to smell bad or no longer feels fresh, sprinkle a little baking soda on the surface, scrub it gently with a brush, and let it sit for 15 to 30 minutes. Then vacuum it up.
2. Remove odors from carpet

Do the same as with the mattress. Sprinkle baking soda on the carpet, let it sit for up to 30 minutes, and then vacuum thoroughly. Make sure the vacuum's dust container is empty so that it can absorb the soda as best as possible.
3. Clean the electric kettle

If light limescale deposits have formed at the bottom of the kettle, baking soda can help.
Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of baking soda, fill the kettle at least halfway with water, boil the water, turn off the appliance, and let the mixture sit for about 20 minutes. Then rinse well and wipe the metal parts with a cloth.
4. Clean the shower head holes

If the water isn't coming out evenly or your shower head has accumulated dirt, make a paste of baking soda and water. Rub it into the holes with a sponge, then rinse with hot water.
If there are a lot of mineral deposits, soaking in vinegar may help even more.
5. Remove stubborn stains from faded glasses

Glasses that have become dull from water deposits can usually be cleaned with vinegar. But if they have stubborn stains, rub them lightly with a little baking soda placed on your fingertip.
Baking soda is only mildly abrasive, so it won't scratch the glass. If you want to be even more careful, add a few drops of water to create a paste, then rinse and dry the glasses with a microfiber cloth.
6. Deep clean the hot air cooking device

Burnt food residue that sticks to this appliance can be removed with the help of baking soda.
Mix baking soda with a few tablespoons of water until a paste forms. Apply it with a soft cloth, carefully rub the dirty areas, and finally wipe again with a dry cloth.
7. Clean light dirt from oven racks

Oven racks can also be cleaned with baking soda. Sprinkle a little on them, rub them with a sponge or a stiffer sponge, and rinse well.
If the dirt is very strong, it is better to use a special oven cleaning product.
8. Whiten the joints between the tiles

Mix baking soda with hydrogen peroxide until it forms a paste. Apply it to the grout, let it sit for a few minutes, then scrub and rinse.
It may require a little more effort, but it pays off when you don't have other products available.
9. Remove small rust stains from stainless steel

If small spots of rust appear, wet a cloth, put a little baking soda on it, and lightly rub the affected area.
Then clean the surface and use a stainless steel polish. Always test on a small area first and avoid rubbing hard on delicate surfaces.
10. Prepare a mild surface cleaner

Baking soda is ideal for creating a gentle cleaner for a variety of surfaces. Simply mix it with a little water until it forms a thick paste and use it to lightly scrub sinks, counters, bathtubs, or other surfaces that need cleaning. Finally, rinse with water and wipe with a clean cloth.
